Safi, commonly known as Asfi, is a city in western Morocco on the Atlantic Ocean. It is the capital and namesake of Safi Province. It recorded a population of 346,888 as of 2024. Safi has some of the busiest ports in the country, handling heavy bulk cargo and energy logistics, and also serves in exporting phosphate fertilizers. The city is also known for its textile and ceramic industries. The city was occupied by the Portuguese Empire from 1488 to 1541 and became a fortaleza of the Portuguese Crown in 1508. During the Second World War, Safi was the site of Operation Blackstone, one of the landing sites for Operation Torch.
