The Virtual Boy is a 32-bit tabletop video game console developed and manufactured by Nintendo. Released in Japan on July 21, 1995, and in North America on August 14, 1995, it was promoted as the first console capable of rendering stereoscopic 3D graphics. The system features a red monochrome display viewed through a binocular neoprene visor mounted on a stand, with games employing a parallax effect to simulate depth. The console struggled commercially, and its poor market performance led Nintendo to discontinue production and software development in 1996 after releasing 22 games. Development of the Virtual Boy spanned nearly four years at Nintendo Research & Development 1 (R&D1) under general manager Gunpei Yokoi, carrying the internal codename VR32 and the product code VUE ("Virtual Utopia Experience"). Nintendo entered a licensing agreement with the American company Reflection Technology, Inc. (RTI) to utilize a stereoscopic LED eyepiece display that RTI had been developing since the 1980s, and constructed a dedicated manufacturing facility in China for mass production. Over the course of development, escalating production costs, health and legal concerns regarding head-mounted displays, and the diversion of company resources toward the Nintendo 64 resulted in the project being scaled back into a stationary tabletop unit. Nintendo's lead game designer, Shigeru Miyamoto, had minimal involvement with its software library, and the console was pushed to market in 1995 so Nintendo could concentrate on the Nintendo 64. The Virtual Boy was panned by critics and became a commercial failure despite repeated price cuts. Its failure has been attributed to its high retail price, monochrome red-and-black visuals, limited stereoscopic immersion, awkward tabletop ergonomics, lack of true portability, and widespread reports of headaches, dizziness, and eye strain.
